Emergency

I can smell gas

Act now. Don’t try to fix anything.

Do this now

  1. 1Don’t use light switches, flames or anything electrical
  2. 2Open doors and windows
  3. 3Turn off the gas at the meter (handle at 90° to the pipe)
  4. 4Leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999

Call us if…

Once the gas network has made it safe, call us and our Gas Safe engineers will repair the appliance.

Never remove the boiler casing. Only a Gas Safe engineer should work inside it.

Try this first

No heating or hot water

Five quick checks before you call.

Try this first

  1. 1Check other appliances work, to rule out a power cut, and that the boiler’s fused spur is on
  2. 2Check the thermostat is turned up and the timer is set to ‘on’
  3. 3Check your gas supply: is the hob working, and is there credit on a prepay meter?
  4. 4Look at the pressure gauge. Below 1 bar? See ‘Low boiler pressure’.
  5. 5In freezing weather, check for a frozen condensate pipe outside
  6. 6Reset the boiler once using the reset button

Call us if…

Still nothing, or the boiler shows a fault code and locks out again. That needs a Gas Safe engineer.

Never remove the boiler casing. Only a Gas Safe engineer should work inside it.

Try this first

Low boiler pressure

The gauge is below 1 bar, or keeps dropping.

Try this first

  1. 1Turn the boiler off and let it cool
  2. 2Find the filling loop, usually a braided hose or key under the boiler
  3. 3Open the valves slowly and watch the gauge climb to between 1 and 1.5 bar
  4. 4Close the valves fully, switch the boiler back on and reset it if needed

Call us if…

The pressure drops again within a few days. There’s a leak somewhere, often a valve or radiator, and we’ll trace it.

Never remove the boiler casing. Only a Gas Safe engineer should work inside it.

Try this first

Frozen condensate pipe

Gurgling, then a lockout during a cold snap.

Try this first

  1. 1Find the white plastic pipe running from your boiler to an outside drain
  2. 2Pour warm (not boiling) water slowly along it, especially at bends and the end
  3. 3Or hold a hot-water bottle or heat pack on the frozen section
  4. 4Reset the boiler once it has thawed

Call us if…

It keeps freezing every winter. We can insulate it, upsize it or reroute it so it doesn’t happen again.

Never remove the boiler casing. Only a Gas Safe engineer should work inside it.

Try this first

Radiators cold in places

Cold at the top, or cold at the bottom?

Try this first

  1. 1Cold at the top usually means trapped air: bleed it with a radiator key while the heating’s off
  2. 2Then check your boiler pressure, as bleeding can lower it
  3. 3Cold at the bottom or in the middle usually means sludge, which a power flush fixes
  4. 4One radiator stone cold? Check its valve (TRV) isn’t stuck

Call us if…

Several radiators are cold at the bottom, or bleeding doesn’t help. You likely need a power flush.

Never remove the boiler casing. Only a Gas Safe engineer should work inside it.

Emergency

Water leak or burst pipe

Stop the water first.

Do this now

  1. 1Turn off the stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink
  2. 2Switch off electrics near the water, but only if it’s safe to reach the fuse board
  3. 3Open cold taps to drain the system
  4. 4Catch water with buckets and towels and move valuables

Call us if…

Straight away. Call us on 01204 693 333 and we’ll get an engineer out as fast as possible.

Boiler banging or kettling

Rumbling, whistling or banging noises.

Try this first

  1. 1Check your pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar
  2. 2Bleed radiators to release trapped air
  3. 3Note when it happens: heating, hot water or both?

Call us if…

The noise continues. Kettling is usually limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger, which is a job for a service or power flush.

Never remove the boiler casing. Only a Gas Safe engineer should work inside it.

Book soon

Pilot light keeps going out

Older boilers that won’t stay lit.

Try this first

  1. 1Check the gas supply to other appliances
  2. 2Follow your manual’s relighting instructions once
  3. 3Check for draughts near the boiler

Call us if…

It won’t stay lit. The thermocouple or gas valve probably needs replacing by a Gas Safe engineer.

“Just had Scott fit our new boiler and I can’t praise him enough — professional, tidy, explained clearly what he was doing and cleaned up afterwards. From Scott the fitter to the bubbly, friendly girls in the office, I’d recommend RJ Martindale to everyone.”

“Excellent service at an excellent price from Ryan and his team for 5 years now. My mother-in-law has just had a new boiler thanks to them and started the Homecare plan, which is so much cheaper than British Gas. We have Homecare too and wish we’d done it sooner.”

“We wanted an aircon unit in our main bedroom and it was done quickly, without issue and without any mess — just so tidy. Dan was superb. A few other jobs done at the same time to a very high standard. Would give 6 stars if I could.”

“What a fabulous team. The office staff are so accommodating and pleasant and the workmanship is excellent. Nothing is too much trouble, no short cuts. I’m changing my long-standing home care agreement with British Gas to Martindale’s because I’m so impressed.”

“A Wi-Fi Bosch air con install in our conservatory. Cannot fault the installers, Daniel & Aaron — a neat job with absolutely no mess, and personable chaps who are a credit to the company. We chose Martindales on the back of reviews and their Which? accreditation.”
